IMG_3468About Jackie Stager: She is a local Sherman teen who enjoys spending time with friends and listening to music. She is fun and outgoing, and is looking forward to summer break. However, unlike other teens, Jackie suffers from a little-known condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder that affects collagen; the glue that holds us together.  Due to the collagen defect, all systems in the body are affected and Jackie has multiple conditions that are associated with EDS. One of those conditions is Chiari 1 Malformation, a brain abnormality in which the lowest part of the brain, the cerebellar tonsils, protrudes through the opening in the base of the skull. Chiari places pressure on the brain stem and interferes with normal central nervous system function, and cerebral spinal fluid circulation. Jacky suffers from several other ailments as well, which are directly caused by EDS.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Chiari Malformation. Proceeds will be used to offset the family’s climbing and ongoing medical bills. In addition, the Stagers will make donations to the Chiari and Syringomyelia Foundation, the Ehlers-Danlos Society, and the CT Zebras Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Support Group.
